KPO conducted Conference on Environmental Aspects associated with performence of Contractors' works

AKSAI, West Kazakhstan Oblast, 6 March 2015 – Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. (KPO) conducted Conference on Environmental Aspects of KPO contracts. Representatives of nearly 50 local and foreign contractors attended the Conference.

Greeting the participants of the Conference, KPO Environmental Management Systems Controller, Arman Markashov said: “As a world-class Operator of hydrocarbon facilities, KPO strives to introduce progressive standards into its operations by ensuring that Environmental performance is at the very top of our business agenda”.

“The main objective of KPO consists in strict adherence to Kazakhstan legislation in accordance with the requirements of ISO 14001”, Arman Markashov added. The key objective of the conference is implementation of KPO Environmental Policy and assurance of environmental safety whilst fulfilment of the Contractual obligations.

The event included presentations prepared by both Kazakhstani (AksaiGasService) and foreign companies (Weatherford).

In addition, the delegates discussed the KPO Procedures on Identification of Environmental Aspects and related environmental issues.

During the event, KPO representatives also answered questions raised by the Conference participants about streamlining registry environmental aspects (with high and medium risk) of the main contractors.

“Such conferences allow contractors to adopt the best practices of rational development of the Karachaganak field with minimal risk of environmental impact,” noted Arman Beketov, “AksaiGasService” Environment Department Manager.

In addition, the conference provided an opportunity to share opinions and knowledge of various approaches and methods to identify and assess the environmental aspect applied in various companies. Participation in the conference of Contractors’ Companies who do not possess Certified Environmental Management System, has given the essential knowledge in this area.

KPO is one of the first companies in Kazakhstan to successfully introduce a local content programme. The implementation of the Local Content Development Programme has allowed involving more than three thousand Kazakhstani companies into the development of Karachaganak. These companies have received orders from KPO for over $4 billion.

In 2014, the proportion of local content in KPO contracts for the supply of goods and services reached 47.39%, or $472.2 million in monetary terms.
