UNIT 2 EMPLOYEES CELEBRATED 1000 DAYS WITHOUT LTI, 24.06.2002

AKSAI, Western Kazakhstan, 24 June 2002 -- Karachaganak Integrated Organisation reached an outstanding milestone in safety performance – Unit 2 team worked 1000 days without a lost-time incident (LTI). Beside that, the Infield personnel reached 1 million man-hours without an LTI.

During a meeting with the entire 4,200 Unit 2 and Infield workforce it was noted that this achievement proved the success of safety culture fostered by KIO, where the ownership of safety is shared across the entire organisation.

"Managers, contractors and the entire workforce of Unit 2 all played a significant part in this achievement and it is a tribute to the safety culture that we have developed on this site. Similarly on the Infield facilities, consisting of flow lines, pipeline wellsites and remote manifolds, the record is excellent. This is the most challenging part of the project from an HSE perspective, as we are working all over the Field territory, close to operational facilities. We manage HSE issues through close daily co-operation with the Contractor, Unit 3 Operations and Well Operations", said Unit 2 Project Manager Karl Roberts.

As KIO Development Director Gerry Albers stated, "This achievement signifies KIO’s and contractors’ commitment to best health, safety and environmental practices and standards. He also pointed out that this outstanding safety record was made possible through a process of careful and diligent planning of works and KIO’s ongoing investment in raising the awareness of safe working practices throughout all the project personnel.

As part of the meeting, a raffle was held. Every employee had a chance to win a TV set, VCR, RCD player or refrigerator. The winners of the Unit 2 raffle were: Vaiisov Orynbai, driver, Zhakyp Spabekov, steel erector, and grinders Kuantai Mukhambetov and grinder.

In recognition of the Unit 2 achievement, Gerry Albers on behalf on KIO and Main Work Contractor passed on to Aryshev Bazarbai, Akim of Berezovka a 3 million tenge donation for gasification of the village. This money will be used to construct the central gas distribution line. Akim of Burlinsky Region Sagidulla Erkebayev had previously agreed to provide funding for connecting houses to the gas supply system. The KIO and MWC contribution and Akimat funding will make possible to have heat by this winter.

Akim of Berezovka expressed his gratitude to Unit 2 team and said, "Today is a double holiday for me. First I am happy to know that Unit 2 team has achieved such an excellent result. And second, I am very happy that the gas supply problem will finally be solved".
