The KPO Environmental Management System complies with ISO-14001

KPO developed a special programme to maximally reduce the negative impact on the environment and climate, to meet the requirements of RoK’s Environmental Code.  The plan is coordinated with the Ministry of the Environment.  The strategy includes nine major sections, including protection of the air, the rational use of water and land resources, flora and fauna; production and consumption waste management systems and the introduction of the best available technology, research and design and survey work, radiation, biological and chemical safety, and environmental education as well as promotion efforts.  The implementation of this plan has particularly resulted in a reduction of pollutant emissions into the atmosphere.  The use of “super green” burners for low-carbon burning during well exploration, using the method of injecting oil and gas condensate during well exploration via a pipeline to the KPC control separator, the modification of equipment at industrial facilities made it possible to significantly reduce emission levels at the Karachaganak field.  To date, the utilisation of associated and natural gas has reached 99.98%.  KPO has introduced a system for the continuous monitoring of the atmosphere.  12 stationary automatic stations and two mobile environmental laboratories monitor the air continuously.  In the immediate future, KPO plans to install 6 stationary automatic stations.  KPO efficiently uses and reuses treated wastewater while carrying out its production activities.

To provide protection from dusty winds, snow storms, soil erosion and to in general help improve the air quality KPO is landscaping the Karachaganak field.  From 2005 to 2010 on, 310 hectares of land were planted with more than 600 thousand trees and bushes.  To minimise industrial and municipal wastes and reduce their impact on the environment, the company has built a modern processing and recycling complex. At present, the installation of a thermal desorption unit, a cleaning mud and liquid waste drilling facility, as well as a rotary kiln and general purpose furnace were put into service, and a modern wastes disposal landfill will soon begin to operate.  KPO is constantly improving their environmental performance and in 2008 the independent company Moody International, successfully carried out a certification audit at KPO for its compliance with ISO-14001 international standards, Panorama newspaper reported.
